What Are Common Drug Rashes
Drugs, whether they be prescription, over the counter or illegal, all have the ability to produce a different reaction in different individuals. Any chemical that is put into the body puts an individual at risk for developing side effects. One of the most common reaction is a rash. So what are common drug rashes you should look out for?
There are various types of rashes. The type of rash an individual experiences will depend upon the type of drug ingested. A rash can be mild, or it can be severe. There are three types of drug rashes. One is a rash that is a true allergic reaction to a medicine. Another is an unwanted reaction to a medication. The last type is a rash that happens when you take a medication and then expose the skin to sunlight. Let’s look at the types of rashes in more detail.
What Are Common Drug Rashes?
The following list will give you more information on the types of drug rashes that can occur and the possible cause of these rashes.
Acne Eruptions
Acne are red bumps or pimples that appear on the chest, shoulders and face. The most common drugs known to cause acne are corticosteroids, anabolic steroids, phenytoin and iodines. Teenagers of course often get acne due to hormonal changes and not from allergic reactions.
Exfoliative Dermatitis
This is a rash that produces thick scaly skin that can cover the entire body. Certain antibiotics such as sulfa, barbiturates, phenytoin and penicillin can cause this type of rash.
Fixed Drug Eruption
This can best be described as a red or purple rash that appears at a single site on the skin. The medications that have been known to cause fixed drug eruptions are antibiotics and phenolphthalein, which is an ingredient found in laxatives.
Hives Rash
These are red, raised bumps that can appear anywhere on the body. Almost any drug can cause a hives rash and when this happens, it is considered to be a true allergic reaction. Some also call this a stress rash.
Morbilliform or Maculopapular Rashes
This is a flat, red rash that resembles the measles. There may or may not be pimples present in the rash. Barbiturates and certain antibiotics are the most common causes of this type of rash.
Purpuric Eruptions
These are purple spots or areas that appear on the skin. They most often appear on the legs. The most common medications that cause this type of rash are blood-thinning medicines and diuretics.
Steven-Johnson Syndrome
These appear as hives or blisters in the inside of the mouth, in the vagina or on the penis. The most common medications that cause this syndrome are barbiturates and antibiotics. A rash from antibiotics can be quite serious and one should seek immediate medical attention. Often people with the Stevens Johnson Syndrome require hospitalization.
If you have ever wondered what are the most common drug rashes you can use the information above for reference. If you are taking a medication and develop a rash, then you should see your doctor right away. Don’t forget that medications used for mental health issues can also have side effects including rashes.
