Teething Rash: Drooling Can Cause a Rash
Teething is an uncomfortable process for your child and can also result in many sleepless nights for you. On top of that, there’s an additional extra bonus which is dealing with a teething rash. Let’s look at both traditional ways to deal with this as well as natural approaches.
Readers have asked for both natural as well as traditional approaches to helping with rashes and I am including below an interesting article by Madeline that addresses a holistic way to help your infant’s rash from teething.
Teething Rash and How to Treat it Holistically
It’s not uncommon for a baby to have what is called a teething rash - ie a rash that only occurs during an acute teething phase. It’s not one of the most common teething symptoms, but it is a symptom that occurs.
The most common treatment for this can be with the use of zinc preparations or cortisone. Parents are becoming increasing concerned for their child’s future health and the likely impacts that can result after the use of such medication.
Can you treat this teething rash in a more natural or holistic way, rather than just covering over the effects?
The answer to that is a resounding YES!
All teething symptoms can be resolved with the correct homeopathic medicine.
You can either seek the services of a professional homeopath, or you can try to work out the correct medicine yourself. This may take you a while, so don’t attempt it if you feel unsure.
One of the best homeopathic medicines for any growth phase is Calcarea carbonica (Calc carb). But your child’s symptoms need to match those of the medicine, for it to work.
The typical symptoms of Calc carb include:
- problems during a growth phase, or slow growth (eg teething or a rash)
- craves eggs, especially boiled
- constipated, but unaffected by it
- sweat smells sour
- sweats mainly at the hairline or back of the head
- easily frightened (eg the dark, monsters, animals, heights)
- is normally plump or plumpish
- suffers in the cold or wet
Apart from the teething rash, if you can match another two strong symptoms in the above list, to your child, then Calc carb is likely to be a great match for your child.

In terms of other approaches, remember that a drool rash is helped by using a towel or cotton material gently on their skin. During sleep their is often friction with the sheet and this reults in a rash due to wetness. Some moms will use vaseline or a thick moisturizer on baby’s skin near the mouth to create a protective barrier to control teething rash. Remember that it’s also possible that your child’s rash is due instead to eczema or an allergic reaction to foods, so try to analyze if it’s the result of teething.
