Skin Chafing and Rashes

skin chafing picture The skin can get irritated and chafing is the term used that describes the result from rubbing, friction and skin contact resulting in inflammation due to factors that include heat and humidity issues. We rub the skin when it’s already under stress. This can also be due to chemicals that irritate.

There are things we can do to prevent some of the underlying causes of chafing. When you get new clothing, always wash them to soften the fabric and treat them. If you’ve been out in the rain or have worked out and were sweating try to take a shower and change into fresh clothing. Wash out sports’ clothing often because you probably had been sweating and this residue remains in the fabric.

If you are involved in running, walking and other activities where there is repeated friction, this is something to keep your eyes on. Being overweight can make you more susceptible. Also, the areas most affected are usually the armpits, groin area, under the bra and inner thighs. Drink water and keep your body hydrated. Avoid tight fitting clothing and fabrics that aren’t cotton. Pantyhose is good to avoid if there are alternative for your job.

To help relieve a chafing problem you can apply corn starch to the skin. Natural ingredients such as aloe vera gel and vitamin e work well together. Over the counter zinc creams and vitamin a and d creams are very helpful. Oil such as olive oil and calendual oil are good to reduce chafing irritation.

Remember to moisturize after showering and be sure to get all the soap off your body. Soap is drying and this can be an irritant on the skin. You don’t want to get rash bumps from residues left on your skin and this part can be prevented with good rinsing habits.

  1. My 2 aunts that are very overweight have bad chafing rashes in their inner thighs. It’s a catch-22 because they should exercise but then they get the rash from chafing friction.
