Rash from Nickel: Mobile Cell Phone Problems

Do you have cell phone dermatitis? That means you are having a reaction to the nickel on your cell phone. A lot of the phones have nickel in the buttons as well as area around the screen and other parts of the phone. If you sweat, this can cause the nickel to interact with your skin as well. There are some kits you can use with a swab to test your phone.

Some people say it can also be the radiation from the cell phone that can cause a rash. This seems to be a separate issues as reactions to nickel in jewelry and on belt buckles is a known allergy. Manufacturers have different proportions of nickel in cell phones so it is good to check this out if you have a propensity to contact dermatitis and sensitivity to various substances that touch your skin.

Don’t think this means you can just resort to texting! People get rashes on their fingers and hands as well due to texting so if you have an allergic reaction to nickel, it will apply to your hands as well and not just your face and ear areas.

In the spot test kits for nickel, you can apply a q-tip to the cell phone and if it turns pink, you’ll see the nickel areas. Studies by the Center for Disease Control have found nickel allergies something that a number of kids suffer from. Adults also can have reactions to nickel. You can get allergy testing done but hopefully cell phone manufacturers will have some regulations for nickel so that this problem isn’t rampant.

If you do get an allergic reaction, steroids and cortisone creams are usually prescribed to treat it. If you use an ear piece instead, check out it’s composition as this will have contact with your inner ear.

  1. My girlfriend get a rash from most jewelry. Maybe it is the cheap kind? Will this always happen or will that nickel contact dermatitis rash ever get better? Do you outgrow it? I know certain pants buttons that press on her skin near belly button also leave a red mark so it’s hard for her to shop.

  2. Is dermatitis eczema from nickel something that is inherited from one’s parents? My mom has sensitive skin and I think the eczema lotion she uses for it is from the health food store because she gets a bad rash just looking at drug store creams.

  3. My son gets “belt buckle rash” . He also has a hard time wearing watches. I hope he build a tolerance to the nickel metal because I think it will limit him as he gets older. Do people adjust to it?

  4. I used to get a rash from jewelry I wore on my wrist but don’t now so maybe I did outgrow the contact dermatitis rash because it seems ok. I never got a rash from my cell phone but sometimes I get eruptions if I use a suntan lotion that is new.
