Itching Without a Rash: What Can It Be
When your skin is itchy and breaks out in a rash, it is easier for a doctor to diagnosis which skin condition you have. However, if you have skin that is itching without a rash present it is more difficult to determine the cause. Finding the cause of the irritation will take a combination of history taking, clinical examinations and multiple laboratory tests. Through the process of elimination or exclusion, a doctor may be able to find the cause of your histamines and other bodily chemicals reacting possibly to an environmental irritant or allergy. There can also be hormonal reasons, an underlying illness, an infection or other reasons.
Skin irritations that have tingling or tickling sensations can be caused by a minor, temporary environmental nuisance, or some other underlying condition due to medication or food sensitivity, or even the early stages of some skin disease. Although scratching or applying anti-itch creams and medications can temporarily alleviate the irritation, these remedies won’t permanently solve some skin conditions.
Scabies is a parasite that can cause an Itchy Skin Rash and the redness may not appear for several weeks. When you look at pictures of scabies, the rash can look similar to other rashes such as eczema or chicken pox. People scratch their skin but don’t notice a rash initially.
One symptom found in over half of the chronic cases of kidney disease is itchiness. This is due to the accumulated toxins in the body because the kidneys can not clear them properly. Certain types of liver diseases can cause itchiness on the soles of the feet and the palm of the hands. This itchiness can later spread to different areas of the body. This skin irritation is due to the salt in the bile and peptides in the blood and skin becoming elevated.
Hormones levels can also contribute to skin irritation without any visible signs of hives. Both hyper and hypothyroidism can cause itchiness because of blood flow levels. The constant changes in the body caused by pregnancy can also intense general itching; this is more so in the third trimester. Other conditions like, diabetes, certain tumors that secrete hormones, iron deficiency anemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and HIV have symptoms of itchiness.
It is important to remember, that just because your skin is itching without a rash visible, don’t take it lightly. A sign that the itching can be a symptom of something serious is that once you have scratched it or applied topical medication, it still won’t go away. Consult with your doctor and dermatologist to rule out the more serious roots of this irritation if it continues.

Some people get itchy when stressed similar to the way people can have tics. My cousin does that- whenever he gets nervous he starts scratching his neck and it is like a nervous habit, but I know it does really itch him.
My wife read a book about menopause and it said that itchy arms can be a symptom of that. She had that without a rash and it seems to be due to her hormones being out of whack.
This sounds weird but I can get very itchy just hearing that someone else has a bad rash that itches. It is my mind because I don’t have symptoms. I also get this when I hear someone has an allergic reaction to something. I am very sympathetic but too much.
