Estrogen Compounds in Moisturizers

estrogen in moisturizersDr. Adrienne Olson submitted a number of moisturizers to a lab to be analyzed and found out that six of them contained estrone or estriol. She is a breast cancer survivor and did not want to expose herself to estrogen that could be absorbed topically. Since many people with rashes use moisturizers, especially for types of eczema, this seemed to be an important situation to know about.

For atopic eczema, nummular eczema and other forms of dermatitis, moisturizers are very helpful for skin healing. But, what I found interesting about the research from Dr. Olson was that manufacturers are not required to put the ingredients of moisturizers on the bottles. Women are aware of the research around hormone replacement therapy but there hasn’t been much knowledge about the situation with moisturizers until it was exposed by Dr. Olson. Estrogen enhances skin and gives a youthful appearance but certain forms of breast cancer are estrogen-dependent depending on the receptors and classification. Labelling is not required by the companies.

Why is estrogen more of a concern in moisturizing crèmes than in the food we consume? Our bodies can absorb chemicals through our skin. These chemicals are given direct and concentrated access to our body tissue, and even our organs. Foods that are consumed containing estrogen hormone have to process through the digestive system and most becomes waste, making the moisturizers the far greater risk.

When shopping for moisturizing lotions, it is best to look for products that are all natural and organic.A useful moisturizer may contain a nano emulsified version of the enzyme, Coenzyme-Q10. This modified enzyme has the ability to remove free radicals from the skin, which help to fight against wrinkles production. If you find products that contain plant oils and healthy compounds, you will help protect yourself from disease. Research healthy recipes for homemade moisturizers, or call companies that sell your favorite skin care and ask them. For rashes, it’s important to be aware that alcohol and other ingredients can make eczema worse. Oils such as coconut oil, neem oil and olive oil are nurturing to the skin. Miracle II Moisturizer has no preservatives or additives. In fact, it expires after 6 months after being opened as the manufacturer does not want to add allergens. You can also find other items at the health food store as well as make your own moisturizers.

For rashes that benefit from moisturizer, it is helpful to apply it while the skin is damp after a shower. For fungal infections, moisturizers are not the ideal solution but instead it is best to use an anti-fungal cream.

  1. That is so courageous of Dr. Olson to personally have the moisturizers tested. I am stunned that these products don’t have to have all ingredients on the label, especially with the info about hrt and cancer. I’m going all natural now.
