Bed Bugs: Why Are They Always in the News
It seems hard to go a day without reading about bed bugs in the news. Why is that? According to researchers at U of Mass at Amherst, there has been a resistance to insecticides. They are saying that NYC bedbugs are over 200 times more resistant to deltamethrin . The poisons that attack the bed bugs nervous system called pyrethroid toxins are just not as effective. This is being attributed to them having a less sensitive nervous system. Fortunately, they do not seem to spread diseases but nonetheless it is a problem and can result in rashes for home dwellers and the need for full extermination.
According to MSNBC news a woman who was suffering from a number of health problems attributed them to lupus (which she did have) but it was bed bugs that also contributed to them. She had found a bug and it was confirmed that other apartments in the complex had bedbugs.
They advise to be sure there aren’t any holes around plumbing and electrical wires. Buying old mattresses and used furniture needs to be re-evaluated Cincinnati is getting the word out about bedbugs by making a dvd and brochures to distribute. They said that 15 percent of the population there has had them but that extermination is not always taken. They urge that extermination is a necessity to control this.
The bed bugs rash often begins as a red mark and it can look like a welt. There may be swelling and if you scratch , this will aggravate it. Check to see if others in your building are experiencing something similar. Hopefully other cities will follow Cincinnati’s lead to educate the public and emphasize the need for extermination to assist in control of the pests. Some blame international travel and the reduction in the intensity of pest control products for the recent reportings of the bed bugs once again.







Bedbugs are really gross. My step-brother had them in his NYC apt and his landlord did not want to do anything to treat the bedbugs. He said that it would go away. What a jerk. He ended up moving out because the bedbug rash was pretty bad.
