Baby Diaper Rash Controversy In the News
The power of Facebook and Blogging is apparent in the controversy that has arisen between some concerned moms and Proctor and Gamble over their Pampers with Dry Max diaper product. A social worker and mother of an 8 month year old, Sara Fobear, set up a facebook page requesting P and G to recall the Dry Max product. She believes it results in severe rashes and blisters. Through social media, others have joined in with similar complaints. P and G disagrees with the allegations and denies that the new pampers cause these diaper rashes. They argue that diaper rashes are common and that the Dry Max product was tested.
The older Cruisers and Swaddlers products were replaced by the new diaper Dry Max that is supposed to be twenty percent thinner and absorb twice the amount compared to previous versions.
There are already some law suits in the works and an investigation was begun on May 3rd by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to study the complaints. The law suits mention the diapers resulting in serious rashes, red blisters, chemical burns, and infections in infants and toddlers.
I will be following this in the news to see how it resolves. The internet makes it much easier for word to get out on doubts about products as well as someone’s behavior. As a social worker myself, I know that we learned the power of advocacy and standing up for our rights as well as being cautious of allegations. I will update with a new post as new information comes in on this.

I don’t mean to be cynical , but I just don’t think we can trust big companies. They can say that many babies get diaper rash and sores but if there is evidence that it discontinued when people switched to a different type of diaper than that seems pretty important.
If they are doing an investigation than maybe that means there have been some substantiated evidence about the diaper rash sores as a result from this product. It is true that a lot of baby’s get diaper rashes but it can also be from allergies to products that contact their skin so then this might be a very legitimate class action suit. Let’s keep our children safe.
I don’t think that the Consumer Product Safety Commission just investigates any claim so that means they must have enough to at least study the reports from people about the diapers causing a rash. Why not bring back the old diaper anyway, since a lot of people seem to want it. My little girl gets eczema on her cheeks so I am trying to feed her foods that are good to see if that will help her out. I’m scared about the summer coming.
This reminds me of the oil spill situation. Why don’t big companies take responsibility? Why can’t they look at the complaints about the diaper rash problems and not just dismiss by saying that lots of babies get nappy rash. Yeah, that can be true but it doesn’t mean that there may not be problems with the product.
