5 Common Types of Eczema: Stopping the Rash Cycle
There are different forms of eczema and some seem to be worse during winter and summer seasons. Babies and kids can be prone to atopic eczema and seborrheic eczema. However, adults also can be plagued by this. If you have dermatitis, you can find yourself quite frustrated by the itching and redness. To see kids cope with this can be very painful too. Let’s get into some of the common forms of eczema as well the triggers that can set them off.
Atopic eczema isn’t contagious and you can see toddlers with it. In infants and small children you can detect it in typical areas sucah as the bends of the elbows, wrist areas, crease in the knees, scalp, and face. Some kids also get it on their butts. In some people it is just red pimples, but others will get blisters and crusts as well. It can also thicken the skin. Experts say that atopic dermatitis is due to allergic reactions to foods, dust, pollen, pets or chemicals in environment. This can be a number of elements to analyze.
Seborrheic Eczema is often in the face and scalp. It can be around the ears and even eyebrow areas. is a skin rash that tends to appear in the first few weeks of life. It doesn’t seem to be as itchy as other forms of eczema for many people. You may see scales and lots of redness. Eczema scalp pictures may not be easy to see due to fact that people scratch and that disguises the original situation, hair covers the area and it is hard to photograph.
When someone has irritant contact dermatitis, this can be due to a substance that your body keeps contacting and reacting to. For instance, at beauty salons, some stylists suffer from this when working on coloring customers’ hair. It can be difficult to find out the profession you are in may be harmful to your body. Some mechanics and nurses I’ve seen in counseling have had to deal with career changes because of the allergic contact dermatitis. One hair stylist had allergic eczema for a year and couldn’t tell which aspect of the job was the problem and is now back in school for a degree as a pharmacy assistant.
Similar to irritant contact dermatitis is allergic contact dermatitis. This is usually a very localized reaction such as due to a metal button on one’s pants. Some people also react to latex gloves, alcohol in products and metals in jewelry or their cell phone.
Nummular eczema is what I was diagnosed with last summer. There were circles all over my stomach, sides and butt as well as little red pimples. This was extremely itchy to the point I was on antihistamines for a month (and I don’t take pills)! It took a long time to get a correct diagnosis from a dermatologist. Some people develop this who have atopic dermatitis in the family or have bad circulation problems. It is interesting because they say it can be due to an insect bite and I did see a big mark near my belly button before getting the rash all over my body. Also, the skin was extremely dry prior to getting the rash. I never had very dry skin or winter eczema and dry skin rashes never ran in my family.
Some elderly people get varicose eczema which is due to ciruclation issues. It can occur when has diabetes or other disease as well as weigh issues. Early signs may be that the skin is dry and itches without a rash. It is important to treat this to avoid ulcers.
One thing that all eczema sufferers need to do is to moisturize the skin. Don’t neglect this. Take oatmeal baths, use an antihistamine as needed and try to de-stress. I found flax seed oil, using natural oils on my body like neem, olive and coconut oil as well as other supplements for the skin useful. Do not scrub the skin (yes I did that too).
